Metal Gear Solid Mobile Review

Believe it or not, the Metal Gear series started off in over two decades ago in 1987 and has since transformed into a glorious 3D stealth-action game.
Stealth is the key, you can't just run around blowing people's heads off. Sneak around corners, use your camouflage and hide under cardboard boxes - yes sounds strange but the series and its ever growing popularity put it as one of the greatest stealth games ever created.
Now Konami bring their skills to N-Gage with Metal Gear Solid Mobile. This is Konami's first attempt on the new generation N-Gage and they've done very well.
The one thing we must mention is you've got to be somewhat of a Metal Gear boffin to understand what's going on when the game first starts.
The game takes place between Metal Gear Solid (available on PC and Playstation) and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (available on PC, Playstation 2 and Xbox) so if you haven't played one or either of the games here's a quick intro as to what the hell's going on:
The character you play, Solid Snake teamed up with the scientist Ocelot to create the secret organisation "Philanthropy" to rid the world of "Metal Gear". Solid Snake came from retirement to infiltrate various terrorists and stop them launching nuclear missiles. He succeeded but information leaked out which meant Metal Gear weapons could be created by other no-good bad guys. Now it's time to try and stop that from happening.
"What's Metal Gear?!" we hear you cry. Metal Gear (Metal Gear REX) is a mobile platform for launching nuclear weapons which Solid Snake must prevent from being created. So in Metal Gear Solid Mobile you, Solid Snake, with the help of your friend Otacon set out to rid the world of Metal Gear weapons and information. Otacon gets a lead from whistle-blower Dr Victoria Reed, a programmer who was working on Metal Gear. With the information you get from your allies you set out on your mission.
That's enough of the story to keep you going for now. Not much more can be said without spoiling the game for you.
So how is the game itself? Well at 2MB big you'd easily think you're not in for much but somehow, Konami have squeezed good 3D visuals, sounds, music and fun gameplay into the package. It's quite incredible how big the game is at such a small file size.
When you start the game you should complete the VR Missions. These are a set of Virtual Reality training missions which help teach you the controls of the game. Each mission is worth doing not only because you get 10NGP for each one completed but they teach you invaluable skills you'll need throughout your mission. How to shoot, climb, crawl, sneak, camouflage yourself is all there with virtual enemies to play with too. Once you're through the training it's time to put your knowledge to the test.
You start off in the ground floor of your enemies base with the odd guard dotted around to get you warmed up. As you progress however you'll face more guards, bigger weapons, booby traps, security cameras and security turrets. Climb your way over or under boxes and crates and over rails to progress. For a mobile game this level of detail was unexpected but definitely very welcome! You feel like you can really do what you want within the world.
The game gives a good sense of freedom as there is normally more than one way to approach your enemies:
Hide behind a wall and peek round to see if he's coming, if he is, tap on the wall to grab his attention. As soon as he's round the corner BANG! he's dead (or asleep if you chose to tranquilize him).
You could also just learn his patrol pattern and sneak around when he's going in the opposite direction to you.
If you choose to do so, follow him round, sneak up and then break his neck to put an end to his life. When you put a guard out of his misery be aware that regular radio checks with base will mean another will come down in his place if there there is no response. Move quick but move quietly.
I say move quietly because the game recognises how fast you're moving. You can just run up to a guard without him hearing you and calling for backup. Sneak up and take it slowly. Plan your moves well because if you miss another patrolling guard you're in trouble.
As you progress you'll get new weapons and items but more importantly you'll be able to use your camouflage This is invaluable in later stages of the game and you are taught how to use it when it becomes available. This is the exciting bit: the game supports your phone's camera to find a camouflage colour. For example, some rooms have sensors which only allow workers to enter who wear a certain uniform (red). Find something in your real-life surroundings that's red, a tomato for arguments, sake and take a shot with your camera. Your camouflage will then turn the same colour as tomato (red assuming it was ripe) and you'll gain access to the room. If you want to conserve battery power you can choose not to use this feature but it can be quite fun trying to find something in real-life that will help you in-game. If you do want to save power there is always a poster on the wall in-game that you can use to match your colour to.
Camouflage also helps you sneak past guards and security camera. When leaned up against a wall you see your current level of camouflage indicated at the top of the screen. If you match your surrounding well enough you can go unspotted however, don't expect to be able to run around without anyone seeing you. The slightest of movement bring your camouflage down and you become more visible. The best tip is to move slowly and only when the coast is clear or you're not in direct view of a guard.
Speaking of views, you have a small map of your current location in the top right of the screen. Each guard or camera has a field of view indicated by a yellow radar. As they move about what they can see changes around (obviously) so make sure you don't sneak into someone's view. The map is extremely useful and you'll find yourself using it constantly. Not a bad thing at all unless you're moving around looking at the map and you fall victim to a trip mine or something! You can't help but laugh when this happens, when it happens the second time it's even funnier.
Each room in the game has a purpose. Whether it's to replenish your rations (health), stock up on ammunition/weapons or progress in the game. You'll normally find somewhere you can hide too. You can hide under tables, in toilet cubicles and even in guards' lockers. You'll want to hide if you're being chased. If someone spots you and they raise the alarm before you take them out it's time to hide. Hide inside a locker and switch to first-person view to see if the coast is clear. If your "alert" level returns to green (after about 15 seconds) and the guards go back to patrolling it's safe to come out. This gives a good feeling of stealth and can be quite exciting to see guards running around looking for you when you're just hid under a table or in a cubicle.
You'll get lots of updates via your "Codec" throughout the game which is your way of communicating with the Dr and Otacon. Metal Gear Solid is known for its lengthy talks through the Codec and luckily Metal Gear Solid Mobile keeps them short and sweet. Some of the dialog is actually quite funny too which is sure to make you laugh out loud.
The graphics and controls are great. The game plays very well in portrait and landscape modes although I'm sure most people will prefer the latter to make it feel more like a console game - and it does feel like one too. At any time during the game you can switch to first-person mode and look at your surroundings. Although you can't move while in this mode it helps to check for hidden objects or items and will come in handy during your mission on more than one occasion. The controls are simple yet effective. Move with the d-pad (or 2, 4, 6 and 8 keys) and press A for action and B to shoot. This is probably where landscape mode wins over portrait as it's a lot easier to remember what's what if there are only 2 game buttons on display.
The game saves at each room you enter. For new areas there is a small loading period while this happens and the next part of the level loads up but this never becomes a problem. Also, if you die you will start from the last room you entered - you have unlimited attempts.
The sounds in game are very suited to the genre. Quiet ambient music suddenly bursts into fast-paced action music when you get spotted. This can be genuinely scary if you're trying your best to sneak around and don't know you're going to get spotted! There you are sneaking up behind a guard and he suddenly hears your footsteps and !!! there goes the alarm bells and music!
There is N-Gage Arena connectivity which is sadly only leaderboards. You get to see the top 6 players and your own position wherever that may be. It's a shame there wasn't some kind of multiplayer but obviously this would have meant higher development costs and longer production time. Still, Metal Gear Solid Mobile does very well on its own.
Metal Gear Solid is fantastic fun and when it first makes you jump with shock/fear you'll know the developers have really done their job here. £6 is nothing to ask for such a great N-Gage experience and although the game isn't huge there is plenty of replay value. Some of the Pickup Points require you to complete the game without your radar activated or without killing any guards which is great fun to try and do. You won't be disappointed with Metal Gear Solid Mobile.

The Japanese have always been good at shock-horror moments in games and it's all about the sounds in-game. Metal Gear Solid goes a long way to immerse you in the game and its surroundings and pulls it off well.
Graphics: 8.5/10
The game looks great and plays so smoothly. Being able to look around in first-person view is an added bonus to an already good looking game.
Gameplay: 9/10
You can't ask for much more. The game handles perfectly in either display mode and is a pleasure to play again and again.
